03:11 grantbow while installing on 10.04 I got the following:
03:12 Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/python-sugar-0.88_0.88.0-1ubuntu1_i386.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
03:20 timClicks grantbow, how did you install it?
03:22 seidos <seidos!~seidos@cpe-76-168-0-89.socal.res.rr.com> has joined #ubuntu-sugarteam
03:24 grantbow timClicks: I followed the 10.04 instructions https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sugar/
03:24 timClicks sorry to hear things went badly for you
03:25 grantbow if I can debug it far enough I'm happy to file a good bug out of the experience
03:26 oops, because for 10.04 it's still a ppa the automatic bug reporting didn't complete successfully
03:27 a box popped up but it failed after two click-throughs
03:27 timClicks hrm
03:39 grantbow, what happens when you do "sudo dpkg -i   /var/cache/apt/archives/python-sugar-0.88_0.88.0-1ubuntu1_i386.deb"
03:41 actually, a better command would be
03:42 sudo dpkg  --debug=3773 -i  /var/cache/apt/archives/python-sugar-0.88_0.88.0-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
03:45 there is a quite good tutorial here
03:45 http://shearer.org/Debugging_Dpkg_Problems
03:46 grantbow triest the dpkg command
03:47 hmm, quite a bit of output, looking for a pastebin
03:51 ok, I ran that with 2>&1 on the end and I got http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/520539/
03:51 timClicks: I'll look at the tutorial now too, thanks for the link
03:57 nUboon2Age <nUboon2Age!~saintlee@c-98-234-185-152.hsd1.ca.comcast.net> has joined #ubuntu-sugarteam
04:00 grantbow timClicks: I tried to do an apt-get install asoundconf-gtk for an unrelated problem
04:01 timClicks was that having trouble as well?
04:01 grantbow I got the following: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/520541/
04:01 timClicks i recommend asking in #ubuntu
04:02 grantbow I have nowhere near the time to do that.  I'm at UDS trying to catch up on things before tomorrow and still get some sleep.
04:02 I don't think these issues are unrelated to the sugar packages from what I see so far
04:02 nUboon2Age sometimes apt-get is ineffective in resolving dependencies, where Synaptic does better (or Aptitude) grantbow
04:03 Quozl i've never had anything do better than apt-get for resolving dependencies.
04:03 grantbow maybe, but the real issue is a failed install script in python-sugar per http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/520539/
04:04 nUboon2Age well your mileage may vary, but i'm not the first to say that Quozl
04:04 grantbow nUboon2Age: you came in late and missed the first part of this discussion unfortunately
04:04 nUboon2Age so sorry grantbow
04:05 so does the install script essentially break the apt cache stuff grantbow?
04:07 grantbow every package includes install scripts, and when they break the system can be in an indeterminate state
04:08 as I think is part of the problem here along maybe with some dependencies that may be related to my older attempt to install packages similar to these on this machine
04:09 nUboon2Age has quit IRC
04:09 grantbow looking at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/520541/ I think the problems are related to the current packages and current failed install script as described by the output http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/520539/

11:21 satellit_ grantbow: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sugar and http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/C[…]tributions/Ubuntu
11:23 http://download.sugarlabs.org/[…]i386-20101007.iso latest (Just have to add surf-115 to complete it)

13:10 grantbow satellit_: I'll try that later after I fix my machine one way or another as the package install script broke and now my machine can't install packages until I get something resolved with it.
13:11 I will probably uninstall I guess
13:12 satellit_ Try USR  (use USB startup disk creator to make a USB installer)
13:13 grantbow satellit_: I will do that after I fix my broken system then download USR
13:13 satellit_ ok good luck......
13:13 grantbow I just got the zsync files from http://download.sugarlabs.org/usr/
13:15 satellit_ you can run as non-install also
13:15 from USB
13:15 grantbow after I fix the broken package script
13:15 satellit_ :  )
13:15 grantbow breaking people's systems with bad packages is very very bad
13:16 satellit_ http://people.sugarlabs.org/Tgillard/Surf-115.xo  is good browser to use with USR then can load terminal etc,,,,
13:17 drag drop from 2nd USB
13:17 grantbow quite frustrating this discussion
13:17 the package is broken
13:17 it needs to get fixed
13:17 if you can help great
13:18 anything else than my broken system right now is not very helpful as once I uninstall I won't be able to help debug this serious problem of breaking machines with the existing sugar packages offered for use in the PPA
13:20 I would rather work with someone who cares to fix this than ignore it as it's a serious bug that disables at least my machine and probably others
13:21 satellit_ USR is 10.10 so no need for ppa  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-sugar-remix from Universe
13:22 anubhav_ alsroot: hi
13:22 alsroot anubhav_: hi
13:22 anubhav_ alsroot:  could you provide some pointers on Multiple numbers appended to make filenames unique on removable devices.(#2453)
13:23 grantbow satellit_: you are missing the point
13:24 satellit_ OK I am not a ubuntu guru....... I am sugesting a fresh install....Obviously you are not
13:24 anubhav_ alsroot: according to my understanding i have to get the metadata of each item in listview and check there titles and chnge them accordingly
13:24 alsroot anubhav_: see model.py in journal sources, it should take care of creating new files
13:25 grantbow the sugar packages broke my system - if I uninstall I can't help fix it
13:25 and my effort is wasted and other people's machines are going to break
13:25 did you see the output of the two pastebins last night?
13:26 satellit_ grantbow: I cannot help you on this....sorry
13:29 anubhav_ alsroot: we have check the titles of other icons while writing here w can change but how could we get the titles on already existing icons ?
13:30 grantbow satellit_: Understood, just stop offering alternatives as if you are ignoring the real problem.  I'm not only interested but willing and able to help try to help get things fixed for myself and anyone else that tries the packages on Ubuntu. I can look at the script later when I have more time.
13:30 alsroot anubhav_: in my mind changing filenames of already existed files is overkill
13:32 anubhav_ alsroot: ok.. my question was how can we get the previous title not for changing but for comparing so that we can name the existing bundle accordingly
13:34 alsroot anubhav_: if there is not chances to get it from code, it is impossible - datastore doesn't provide history of matadata changing
13:37 anubhav_ alsroot: ok thank you...
14:21 manusheel_afk is now known as manusheel
15:56 lfaraone grantbow: did you file a bug about tht?
15:56 grantbow hi luke!
15:56 not yet
15:57 lfaraone grantbow: the issue is that you have sugar-base installed from the PPA, at least from my inspection of your logs.
15:57 grantbow are the pastbins enough for an actionable bug? I'd like to narrow it down first
15:57 lfaraone doens't like the PPA, personally.
15:57 grantbow thanks for looking!
15:57 lfaraone grantbow: line 122 http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/520539/ appears to be the actual error.
15:58 grantbow I'm about to step into a session at uds.ubuntu.com on desktop testing
15:58 looks
15:59 the ppa is the only way to install on 10.04 right?
15:59 lfaraone grantbow: no.
15:59 grantbow oh, interesting
15:59 lfaraone grantbow: I think you can install Sugar in 10.04, but it just doesn't have activities.
16:00 grantbow I did install via the ppa.  If there's another way https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sugar needs an update
16:00 lfaraone As a group, I don't think we intend to support 10.04. 10.10 was the first release there was a concerted effort to make it Not Suck.
16:00 grantbow but MY laptop is 10.04 right now, lol
16:01 I hear you
16:01 lfaraone In all honesty, I don't think we should advise *anybody* to use the PPA, there's no quality assurance before packages are uploaded.
16:01 grantbow that wiki page should be updated then
16:04 satellit_ grantbow alsroot used to maintain a ppa for ubuntu. not sure if it still exists
16:06 alsroot satellit_: the last ppa was for karmic, for recent ubuntu versions - official packages and bazaar packages (it contain eg pyxpcom)
16:06 lfaraone We really should do some quality assurance *before* suggesting these things to users.
16:06 satellit_ alsroot: thanks
16:11 grantbow lfarone: yes
16:14 satellit_ grantbow: lfaraone: also see wiki http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/C[…]ugar_on_Ubuntu_10.04_.28lucid.29  these should be checked It has been 6 months since I tried this (worked then)
16:17 lfaraone just posted to the ML about proposed QA for the PPA
16:18 satellit_ grantbow: does software sources show ppa?
16:19 grantbow thank you for the link and ML item
16:19 satellit_: I always use a command line and manually check /etc/apt/sources.list.d
16:19 satellit_ sudo apt-get remove `dpkg-query -W -f '${package} ${maintainer}\n' | grep alsroot | awk '{print $1}'`
16:19 sudo sed -i '/alsroot.sugar-0.86/d' /etc/apt/sources.list
16:19 to remove it?
16:20 grantbow interesting, I'll try that later today
16:20 satellit_ that is from wiki instructions for older ubuntu....just an idea
16:20 alsroot satellit_: yup, but it was an issue only if older ppa was used before
16:21 grantbow I don't think I have an older ppa now
16:25 satellit_ I have 10.10 (USR 902 running now on external USB Drive) works well.. per instructions on wiki's I so sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get upgrade to maintain latest activities
16:28 s/do

16:38 satellit_ lfaraone: any way to restore the ppa to an older working version? (I saw your note in lists about it)
16:51 grantbow: Virtualbox? http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/E[…]_files#VirtualBox   Appliance of UbuntuSugarRemix
16:53 grantbow Virtualbox performance of SoaS sucks. I'm having to repartition a few machines when I get back to california
16:54 satellit_ grantbow: depends on laptop  works great on hp AMD 64x2 laptop

18:05 thangam_arun manusheel, Hii
18:05 dfarning thangam_arun, id you have a good trip?
18:05 thangam_arun dfarning, Yes
18:05 dfarning, gud experience
18:06 dfarning, i have one question
18:06 I am trying to run ./usr-scratch.sh
18:07 it throws cp: cannot stat `build/i386-fs/boot/initrd.img*': No such file or directory
18:09 dfarning, i need to have the rootfs structure in ./usr directory ??
18:10 dfarning thangam_arun, one minute I'll log in th the build machine
18:11 thangam_arun dfarning, okay
18:13 dfarning thangam_arun,  did you run it as 'sudo ./usr-scratch.sh all i386'?
18:14 thangam_arun no
18:14 ./usr-scratch.sh iso i386
18:14 dfarning thangam_arun, it must be run as root because of the file squashing stuff
18:15 thangam_arun dfarning, fine
18:15 dfarning thangam_arun, I think you are on the sudo list.
18:15 thangam_arun dfarning, now its working
18:15 dfarning, Thanks a lot
18:16 dfarning thangam_arun, thanks for working on this!  Have you met grantbow? He is at the ubuntu developer summit this week.
18:16 thangam_arun dfarning, No
18:17 grantbow thangam_arun: are you at UDS too?
18:17 thangam_arun dfarning, i did not know him
18:17 grantbow, no no
18:18 grantbow ok
18:18 dfarning grantbow, thangam_arun is working on the build system so we can make USR - ISOs
18:18 grantbow excellent!
18:18 dfarning http://download.sugarlabs.org/usr/
18:19 grantbow, it is a slightly modified version of Ubuntu Netbook remix with Sugar as a GUI.
18:21 thangam_arun,  i use the following incantation to run a build+upload
18:21 sudo ./usr-scratch.sh all i386 && sudo ./usr-scratch.sh all amd64 && rsync -aP output/* sunjammer:/upload/usr
18:22 thangam_arun dfarning, okay
18:22 dfarning, I just started usr build for both i386 and amd64
18:23 dfarning thangam_arun, nice.
18:24 satellit_ I will test when it gets uploaded to /usr....
18:24 thangam_arun satellit_, Thanks for your support.
18:24 satellit_ yw thanks for all of yours
18:25 dfarning thangam_arun,  A nice task to get familiar with the build script might be to abstact is slightly so that we can make both 10.10 and 11.04.
18:27 thangam_arun, would be pretty straight forward.  just changing a couple of constants to variables.  the chroot command handles all of the hard stuff:)
18:27 thangam_arun dfarning, what are all the chnages need to be done ?
18:28 dfarning thangam_arun, add another case in function_uasge()
18:29 thangam_arun dfarning, okay
18:30 dfarning thangam_arun, change the hardcoded maverick in line 78 of do_debboot strap
18:30 thangam_arun, a couple of minor things like that.
18:31 thangam_arun dfarning, okay
18:32 dfarning thangam_arun, to be complete we will also want to split up the template dir into 10.10 an 11.04 templates.

19:02 thangam_arun dfarning, we need to have to usr-10.10 and usr-11.04 directories ??
19:03 dfarning, how are we going to organise the build for 10.10 & 11.04 ??
19:04 dfarning thangam_arun, hmmm. not sure. What do you think is best?

19:09 dfarning, between, i am getting "Failed to read file build/i386-fs/proc/acpi/info, creating empty file" --> is it wrong or just an information ??
19:09 dfarning thangam_arun, +1
19:10 thangam_arun, I have not noticed that error before.
