Hi |
22:01 |
Quozl |
hello. |
22:02 |
ibiam |
Seems we're the only ones here |
22:03 |
Quozl |
yes. |
22:04 |
ibiam |
I'm currently working on readetexts activity |
22:04 |
|
Completed the port to sugar3.speech |
22:04 |
|
Trying to fix other issues |
22:04 |
|
Getting ready for a release |
22:05 |
Quozl |
i'm not working on anything in particular, most of my time has been pull request reviews, gsoc idea planning, governance, and watching linux.conf.au talks. |
22:06 |
ibiam |
I need to watch some of the talks at linux conf |
22:06 |
|
I wish I could have attended though |
22:06 |
|
I'll just watch some of the talks |
22:06 |
Quozl |
just now, i investigated why the meeting robot is four or five seconds ahead of global time. cause is machine jita.sugarlabs.org which does not run ntp. jita is running unsupported obsolete ubuntu 12.04. |
22:07 |
|
the talks are also available, thanks to me complaining about it again, at mirror.linux.conf.au via rsync. |
22:07 |
ibiam |
Did the upgrade done some months ago exclude some machines? |
22:07 |
Quozl |
rsync://mirror.linux.org.au/pub/linux.conf.au/2019 |
22:08 |
ibiam |
Thanks |
22:08 |
|
I'll check it later |
22:08 |
Quozl |
i think it would be better to say the upgrade done some months ago included some machines. |
22:08 |
ibiam |
Okay |
22:08 |
|
Did it include some? |
22:08 |
Quozl |
yes. |

activities.sugarlabs.org is also on 12.04. |
22:09 |
ibiam |
Which ones were upgraded? |
22:10 |
Quozl |
i don't know, i didn't do it. i've focused on applying updates since. i did upgrade laptop.org servers though, so i can do it in a pinch. |
22:11 |
ibiam |
Okay |

I've not really been taking a look at some of the issues in the gsoc repo |
22:11 |
|
But I've looked at the ideas list |
22:11 |
Quozl |
good. |
22:12 |
ibiam |
And tbh, I don't think we should have "extend the exerciser activity" of sugarizer as an idea |
22:12 |
|
It was worked on last gsoc as a project |
22:13 |
|
And I think we said something about not having the creation of an activity as part of a gsoc project |
22:13 |
Quozl |
i don't remember saying that; can you remember the context or who said it? |
22:13 |
ibiam |
I can't really remember the details of the discussion |
22:14 |
|
And I also think that creating word activity for sugarizer shouldn't be a project idea |
22:14 |
|
First off |
22:14 |
|
Sugarizer runs on the internet |
22:14 |
Quozl |
i've reviewed the extend the exerciser activity and i'm fine with it. the need is there, it is well defined, it looks like more than 12 weeks work. |
22:15 |
ibiam |
I've not done any review for the task |
22:15 |
Quozl |
no, sugarizer can also run standalone; both as an app on the various platforms, and also using sugarizer server in isolated non-connected schools. |

It seems the idea of Scratch and fixing sugar-web was turned down |
22:18 |
|
I think it's a great idea |
22:18 |
|
What do you think? |
22:18 |
Quozl |
fixing sugar-web can be inside the "improve and maintain 25 sugar activities" project easily; all that is needed is an activity that relies on it that has a later version on sugarizer. |
22:19 |
|
also, sugar-web has a later version on sugarizer too, so fixing sugar-web also involves merging with sugarizer's version. |
22:20 |
ibiam |
And Scratch uses sugar-web |
22:21 |
Quozl |
as far as i can see, nobody was willing to start the work on scratch to prove walter and i wrong on our assessment that it sounded like a very small amount of work; remember that gsoc tasks have to fill 12 weeks. |
22:21 |
ibiam |
It's a small amount of work, I feel the same too |
22:21 |
Quozl |
that we had students last year who did their gsoc tasks at a rate of less than half an hour a day is unfortunate, and we are obliged to prevent that. |
22:21 |
ibiam |
But the merge with fixing sugar-web increases the time frame for both |
22:22 |
Quozl |
okay, but iqra didn't know how to estimate that, and after asking me a few questions she closed the pull request. |
22:22 |
|
root cause probably iqra too busy with other things. |
22:23 |
|
so while it's a pity the idea didn't get off the ground, it's because people are too busy with other things. if it's an idea that you think is important, you'll spend some technical time prototyping and estimating. |
22:23 |
ibiam |
She must have closed the pull request feeling the idea was kicked against |
22:23 |
Quozl |
well, i couldn't assume that. |
22:24 |
ibiam |
I agree with estimating |
22:27 |
Quozl |
i've nothing further to discuss. thanks for turning up. |
22:27 |
ibiam |
I'd like to work on the Jupyter notebook in sugar too |
22:28 |
|
But it seems it's only an issue |
22:28 |
|
And not an idea at the moment |
22:28 |
