Meeting started Mon Jan 14 23:01:07 2013 UTC. The chair is walterbender. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot. |

walterbender |
maybe we can start with the PR topic? it is late for SeanDaly |
23:01 |
|
#topic PR funding for 2013 |
23:01 |
SeanDaly |
thanks its true i'm drooping & cat asleep in lap |
23:02 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: wrote Walter - we have been using eReleases with excellent results - they |
23:02 |
|
feed PR Newswire, but are much cheaper. Effective press releases are |
23:02 |
|
key marketing tools when paired with events or interviews, etc. |
23:02 |
|
I would like the Board to approve a ten-pack at 2390 USD. The reserved |
23:02 |
|
releases are good for two years, so the cost could be amortized over |
23:02 |
|
the 2013 and 2014 budgets. |
23:03 |
|
we had an email discussion... we've lots to shout about this year |
23:03 |
|
including Google Code In |
23:03 |
|
and Sugar 1.0 |
23:03 |
SeanDaly |
this is a limited offer from eReleases and is a steep discount from the already discounted nonprofit rate |
23:03 |
walterbender |
did anyone have questions above and beyond the email discussion? |
23:04 |
GeraldA |
no |
23:04 |
walterbender |
maybe we can confirm the email vote: |
23:04 |

23:04 |

I'm +1 on the buy |

am catching up with http://meeting.sugarlabs.org/s[…]eeting/2013-01-07 |
23:09 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: maybe you and cjl can work on a first press release for the year about GCI? |
23:09 |
SeanDaly |
many thanks SLOBs |
23:09 |
|
walterbender: certainly |
23:09 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: a lot of cool stuff |
23:10 |
cjl |
We will need to wait out the GCI embargo on grand prize winners (a few weeks), but it will be nice to talk about it. |
23:10 |
SeanDaly |
i'm sorry i've been down the hold, how best to brief me on GCI? a Skype call? |
23:10 |
walterbender |
anything else on this topic? |
23:10 |
cjl |
SeanDaly: We can communicate by e-mail |
23:10 |
ClaudiaU |
no on my side |
23:11 |
walterbender |
OK |
23:11 |
SeanDaly |
cjl: grand |
23:11 |
walterbender |
let's continue on the plans for 2013 topic... |
23:11 |
|
SeanDaly: get to bed |
23:11 |
ClaudiaU |
I would love to get more familiar but perhaps not in the meeting... I am sure we will be as the PR strategy develops |
23:12 |
walterbender |
ClaudiaU: maybe we can schedule a meeting at an earlier hour for SeanDaly's participation. |
23:12 |
ClaudiaU |
great |
23:12 |
GeraldA |
sure |
23:13 |
walterbender |
OK. we can schedule a time in email |
23:13 |
|
#topic 2013 planning |
23:14 |
SeanDaly |
ClaudiaU: PR is an incredibly efficient tool for raising awareness, but beyond a communications strategy, requires a project strategy... so 2013 goals are starting point for comm strategy although v1.0 release and next large Sugar gathering in there for sure |
23:14 |
|
i'm off to bed thanks all |
23:14 |
walterbender |
goodnight |
23:14 |

Thanks SeanDaly |

23:17 |
ClaudiaU |
thanks walterbender |
23:17 |
walterbender |
re 2013 planning, the OLPC CES announcements have raised some questions/challenges |
23:18 |
|
specifically, Caryl B. asked me to bring up the topic of Sugar on Android |
23:18 |
ClaudiaU |
is Sugar planning to make a public statement? |
23:18 |
cjl |
*sigh* |
23:18 |
CanoeBerry |
aside for later: are we sure we will use all 10 press releases? 5 might be sufficient |
23:19 |
ClaudiaU |
I read many questions in IAEP and OLPC members knew how to answer some, but not all them... |
23:19 |
cjl |
CanoeBerry: over two years, sur ewe can use 10 |
23:20 |
walterbender |
CanoeBerry: in fact, we have lots of queued up cool stuff, like our i18n work |
23:20 |
|
Ariel_Calzada <Ariel_Calzada!~aricalso 190.99.176.3> has joined #sugar-meeting |
23:20 |
walterbender |
CanoeBerry: and even things like school server camps would make nice press if we had a ready vehicle |
23:20 |
|
so I'd think it is worthwhile |
23:21 |
ClaudiaU |
agree |
23:21 |
walterbender |
it'll motivate us to be more proactive |
23:21 |
CanoeBerry |
Yes, as I feel (could be wrong) there's only been 3-5 press releases over the past few years total. |
23:21 |
walterbender |
be nice to issue a release on the assessment work to offset the spam and misinformation that is circulating |
23:22 |
|
lots of topics |
23:22 |
|
CanoeBerry: you are correct. and 10 does seem a lot |
23:22 |
|
CanoeBerry: but I think we need to be more proactive (and to distinguish ourselves from OLPC) |
23:22 |
JT4sugar |
From my perspective Sugar 1.0 on Android should be a strategic goal and it can serve as a recruitment tool and use as a tool to push the multi-languages/pootle angle |
23:22 |
walterbender |
it is the path to further growth |
23:23 |
|
JT4sugar: yes... back on that topic |
23:23 |
|
we had a GCI student write up a report on the topic |
23:23 |
|
cscott has also done some nice work |
23:23 |
|
Ariel_Calzada has quit IRC |
23:23 |
walterbender |
and the work of lionel is relevant. |
23:24 |
CanoeBerry |
Cool, if (as I'm assuming) we/SL still have $10,000++ in the bank. |
23:24 |
walterbender |
looks for the GCI report |
23:24 |
|
CanoeBerry: yes... we have 10K |
23:24 |
SeanDaly |
Canoeberry: some releases will be as objective widespread press coverage, others will "inform" but these play a key role - they build our story, journalists always get up to speed with previous few releases |
23:25 |
|
Canoeberry: also... we would have done more PR, but I couldn't continue footing the bills out of pocket |
23:25 |
walterbender |
yes... we've been off people's radar for too long... and meanwhile we have so many great accomplishments |
23:25 |
|
need to get the word out |
23:25 |
JT4sugar |
A Sugar Labs Contest like GCI to attack Android and build on GCI might be way to go-If Sean & Walter TT-Google they may even foot the bill-More good PR for US&Them |
23:26 |
CanoeBerry |
TT? |
23:26 |
JT4sugar |

23:27 |
|
^^ the Android report |
23:27 |
|
meanwhile, there are several Sugar apps that have been ported to Android, including variants of Turtle Art. |
23:27 |
SeanDaly |
yawns for good despite interest in discussion |
23:27 |
|
SeanDaly has quit IRC |
23:28 |
walterbender |
I think it is important that we clarify the various threads: |
23:28 |
|
(1) Sugar apps ported to Android |
23:29 |
|
(2) Android apps on Sugar |
23:29 |
ClaudiaU |
walterbender: do you have a list of what Activities have been ported to Android? |
23:29 |
|
I would like to know.. |
23:29 |
walterbender |
(3) Sugar on Android (e.g., Journal, collaboration, view source) |
23:29 |
|
(4) XO Learning environment for Android (not Sugar) |
23:30 |
ClaudiaU |
it would be nice to quickly remind people about design principles for Activities in Sugar |
23:31 |
walterbender |
re #1 and Claudia's question, I don't have a list... just that I know of two different TA efforts. |
23:31 |
|
one that has its origins at OLPC |
23:32 |
ClaudiaU |
ok |
23:32 |
walterbender |
and one that came out of the blue from Ali Muzaffar |
23:33 |
|
I know that OLPC was also working on Physics |
23:33 |
|
re #2, there is Lionel's framework and Brian Silverman and C Scott have some apps that could land soon |
23:34 |
ClaudiaU |
i know nothing from OLPC.. it would be nice for this info to come from SL |
23:34 |
walterbender |
re #3, we've had some discussions, but this is a big job and we need to find resources to support the work |
23:35 |
|
re #4, I know little about the plans, but it is a distinct effort from Sugar with a different audience in mind, as I understand it |
23:35 |
|
But I think we should push hard on 1, 2, and 3 in 2013. |
23:35 |

As time is invested into leveraging touch interface (in Linux stack on XO) , the possibility of doing something similar on an Android device (with touchscreen) is worth exploring |
23:36 |
walterbender |
But also, as satellit points out, we can probably run Sugar directly on Chromebooks |
23:36 |
|
and Intel has announced a big push for touch laptops. we are well positioned there as well |
23:37 |
|
those would be Sugar for GNOME/Linux, not Sugar for Android |
23:37 |
|
we should make some noise about those opportunities too |
23:38 |
JT4sugar |
Another breakout move could be Ubuntu from CES I saw Mark Shuttleworth running Ubuntu on a smartphone with all the funtionality of desktop and says tablet also will be able to run. THis could fit nicely with latest Sugar/Ubuntu work. |
23:38 |
walterbender |
JT4sugar: could be... don't know how much of GTK is available on that device |
23:38 |
|
worth investigating |
23:39 |
|
A few other ideas/opportunities kicking around: integration of the Journal with the Cloud... |
23:39 |
|
I'm working with RGS on some ideas on that front |
23:39 |
|
to make it easier to share projects and talk about them in social media |
23:42 |
JT4sugar |
walterbender, I would also try to build in assesment ability into the journal cloud integration if you are not planning already or at least begin the discussion on viability. |
23:42 |
walterbender |
JT4sugar: do you have something specific in mind? something like alsroot 's work? |
23:44 |
JT4sugar |
walterbender, Not exactly an idea but with all the information coming up into cloud it would be very opportune to mine that data on the learning side. |
23:45 |
walterbender |
ClaudiaU and I are working on a write up of the Turtle Art assessments this week :) |
23:45 |
cjl |
If the SomosAzucar Sugar Network tests well we could use one of the releases to give it more visibility. To the new SLOBs, we funded Sebastian Silvas travel to present i tin Colombia to the Marina Orth Foundation. |

Ignacio_ <Ignacio_!~webchat jita.sugarlabs.org> has joined #sugar-meeting |
23:46 |
ClaudiaU |
yes.. we are!! it would be a good paper and we should be more explicit about some design principles for TA |
23:47 |
walterbender |
and hopefully inform where we go next |
23:48 |
GeraldA |
This work on assessments and TA seem really exciting and useful to me. |
23:49 |
|
As is the chance to communicate more broadly some deisgn principles |
23:49 |
ClaudiaU |
agree GeraldA.. you should think about writing something similar |
23:49 |
|
can you publish anything from your thesis in this conference? |
23:49 |
|
it is in NY... |
23:49 |
|
during summer |
23:50 |
|
deadline is next week.... |

walterbender: We should have a bunch of SOAS sticks for you to hand out at that meeting |
23:56 |
CanoeBerry |
walterbender: is there a mailing list reference to satellit's Sugar-on-Chromebook idea? |
23:56 |
walterbender |
Off topic: Just got a nice note from Tincho about the Sugar course he is teaching in .PY |
23:57 |

00:01 |
|
200 tasks + 50 participants... lots of patches |
00:02 |
|
cjl and I will be wrapping things up with Google, but for the record, it was a great experience |
00:02 |
ClaudiaU |
walterbender: I have not received anything from Bradley, besides the email to all of us |
00:02 |
walterbender |
ClaudiaU: I'll ping him. |
