meetbot back in full effect |
10:03 |
|
anyone else around? shall we start? |
10:03 |
|
walterbender is in California I think |
10:04 |
|
we can move quickly if it's just us, but I need to share some news |
10:04 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: at a Qt meeting... spreading the good word |
10:05 |
SeanDaly |
greets walterbender pleased to see you :-) |
10:05 |
walterbender |
had to be up at 5am anyway for a meeting with a group from SL Pakistan :) |
10:06 |
SeanDaly |
OK first off, just wanted to say that with walterbender's help I contacted the ICDL (International Children's Digital Library) |
10:06 |
|
about possibly partnering with us for the Blueberry launch. No reply yet but I'm sure they are thinking about it, will ping them. |
10:07 |
|
I very much like the idea of eBooks as a multi-language effort; |
10:07 |
|
great to have a large quantity, but if most or nearly all books are in English, not so great |
10:08 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: I included Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the most recent snapshot, but it currently fails to load. We'll see what's going on there. |
10:08 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: is it in EPUB? |
10:08 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: yup! |
10:08 |
|
SeanDaly: saving some space, heh ;) |
10:08 |
SeanDaly |
still has a learning curve with finding & loading eBooks |
10:08 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: just grabbed it from gutenberg.org... |
10:08 |
SeanDaly |
yes good to save space :-) |
10:10 |
|
re Blueberry launch, no word back yet from Netbook World organizers if OLPC France/SL can do a presentation there, hoping for response very shortly. |
10:10 |
|
that would be Dec. 8th which I feel gives us enough time to do the launch properly |
10:10 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: yeah... would be good if they got a bit moving. |
10:10 |
|
nods |
10:10 |
|
SeanDaly: actually, remind me of the URL again... |
10:11 |
SeanDaly |
http://www.netbookworldsummit.org/ |
10:11 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: Thomas Canniot... I think this guy is somewhere involved into Fedora. |
10:12 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: any way to check? |
10:12 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ThomasCanniot |
10:12 |
|
was right :) |
10:13 |
SeanDaly |
wow very interesting, i will ask Bastien if Thomas is his contact |
10:13 |
|
any other urgent Blueberry stuff? |
10:14 |
JT4sugar |
walterbender, I think it might be a good idea to have a collaboration between ICDL and Purdue Writing Lab (OWL jr. concept-Online Writing Lab) to push your "Writing to Read" ideas. |
10:14 |
SeanDaly |
Aside from the obvious: that we need a solution to the sugaronastick.com situation |
10:14 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: got disconnected, sorry. |
10:14 |
|
SeanDaly: I guess it would be good to get the website thing off the ground, soon. |
10:15 |
|
SeanDaly: yes... :/ |
10:15 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: yes I saw, didn't speak til you got back |
10:15 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: thanks! :) |
10:15 |
|
SeanDaly: (re website: because I'd think it will take a few days to get content and design arranged properly) |
10:16 |
JT4sugar |
sdziallas, website thing? |
10:16 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: we want to call out Sugar on a Stick on the homepage |
10:16 |
JT4sugar |
SeanDaly, Download button? |
10:17 |
sdziallas |
JT4sugar: yeah. because the wiki tends to be... probably not that much end-user appealing. |
10:17 |
SeanDaly |
Yes a very nice pancake button is on the wiki download page |
10:17 |
walterbender |
I have heard from many people that they find it too difficult to create LiveUSB keys... |
10:18 |
JT4sugar |
sdziallas, Very true for non-tech individuals |
10:18 |
sdziallas |
walterbender: we'll get this done easier! |
10:18 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: does not surprise me |
10:18 |
sdziallas |
walterbender: ...for the cost of hosting more images. |
10:18 |
walterbender |
maybe we need to promote the pre-burned sticks more?? |
10:18 |
sdziallas |
walterbender, SeanDaly: I was discussing with mtd how to make it easier... we still need to draft stuff up, but we should be able to make the whole process generally easier. |
10:19 |
|
walterbender: would it be worth talking to Karlie for that? not sure... |
10:19 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: preloaded like ondisk.com? |
10:19 |
|
always good to propose a choice of ways to get it |
10:19 |
sdziallas |
*nod* |
10:19 |
SeanDaly |
gives a solution if home-loading gets stuck |
10:20 |
walterbender |
all of the above sound good |
10:20 |
SeanDaly |
actually this could be connected to the branded USB stick issue; |
10:20 |
sdziallas |
notes that Karlie was offering to share revenue with SL, if we were interested (I guess if we aren't, that's fine, either) |
10:20 |
SeanDaly |
karlie had mentioned in the past several options for placing stickers on cards/sticks |
10:21 |
|
some kind of 3D bumpy sticker, or classic flat stickers |
10:21 |
walterbender |
will place a new moo card/sticker order when I am back from my trip. |
10:21 |
sdziallas |
:) |
10:22 |
SeanDaly |
re revenue: could be interesting... but might fit better with our positioning if "offered at cost" (good PR for ondisk too) |
10:22 |
sdziallas |
nods |
10:22 |
SeanDaly |
also, some people pay for something and expect service & support; easier to show is still a test version if offered at cost |
10:23 |
|
but i don't feel strongly; revenue could be a good approach too |
10:23 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: actually, this was what we did for the second G1G1, where people could buy a (really good) SD card through ondisk and amazon (both was handled by Karlie) |
10:23 |
JT4sugar |
Maybe we should set up shop and sell sticks(deal with sandisk and belkin offering all builds-reinvest revenue into Sugar Labs) This Holiday season there seems to be no reason for Sugar Labs not to benefit while all those kids with free access to books. Charge a dollar over cost with donation button for more. They want support then join the community |
10:23 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: was for fedora? don't remember |
10:23 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: will get you a link! ;) |
10:24 |
|
JT4sugar: you're right... would prolly be a good thing. |
10:24 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: I myself don't have the bandwidth to negotiate such a deal; do you want to explore that avenue? |
10:25 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: http://www.amazon.com/Fedora-C[…]top/dp/B001L7EGA6 |
10:25 |
|
notes that it would great to have something like that running, but that we'd need to get that rolling sooon. |
10:25 |
SeanDaly |
actually there is something I remember, Karlie offered beta-1 of SoaS on SD Card and i didn't like the product copy or branding; would be great if we coould work on that with her |
10:26 |
sdziallas |
JT4sugar: for the Fedora Card linked above, we were using the SanDisk Extreme III card... it performed great. Not sure of an USB equivalent, though. |
10:26 |
|
sounds like we've got some e-mails to shoot out? ;) |
10:27 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: I have reliably used SanDisk Extreme IIs and IIIs (Compact Flash) on my high-end audio recorder, have always performed flawlessly |
10:27 |
JT4sugar |
sdziallas, If we approached Sandisk I think I would ask them who the USB partner should be-Maybe new line for them |
10:27 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: yes, they're great :) |
10:28 |
|
JT4sugar: *nod* |
10:28 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: perhaps they have CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) group, or foundation? |
10:28 |
|
I had approached Pantone about branded colored sticks, but did not follow up; I'll try to follow up with them too |
10:28 |
|
if they are still doing sticks |
10:29 |
|
on the subject of branded sticks: I really like the idea of stickers |
10:29 |
|
for several reasons |
10:29 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: if we launched SoaS on Dec 8, it would be quite great timing for the season, no? |
10:29 |
|
goes back to listening |
10:29 |
SeanDaly |
1. much cheaper |
10:29 |
|
sdziallas: yes, quite ;-) |
10:30 |
|
2. OK if less professional than preprinted sticks; no confusion about "product"; homemade aspect to it |
10:30 |
|
3. flexibility, stick on anything |
10:31 |
|
4. easy to have logo in many colors (part of SL branding), even if our communications should have a Blueberry color to it this time |
10:31 |
|
5. sourced from different suppliers possible |
10:31 |
|
Also, as a reminder i want to ping Gary about a "sugar boots" sticker |
10:32 |
|
the idea being to stick one on every netbook which boots Blueberry |
10:32 |
sdziallas |
:) |
10:32 |
SeanDaly |
and ideally, film the boot for a viral Dailymotion channel video |
10:32 |
sdziallas |
yay! |
10:32 |
SeanDaly |
anyone who wees a dozen videos listed gets the picture: Sugar on a Stick will boot for you, too |
10:33 |
|
s/wees/sees (!) |
10:33 |
|
OK any more Blueberry stuff? I want to talk about OLPC |
10:34 |
sdziallas |
*nod* ...I think we're good. we should revisit this next week quite a bit, I guess, though. |
10:34 |
SeanDaly |
for info, I was thrown for a loop by Nicolas' interview in Xconomy |
10:34 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: not trying to dictate your agenda, though :) |
10:34 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: yes for sure, launch approaching |
10:34 |
JT4sugar |
SeanDaly, I like Sugar Boots because it indicates that you can boot on anything but the phrase "I've been Sugarized" allows for the next level of conversation about the Sugar Learning Platform(Collaboration, Sharing, Journal) allows student to talk about cool things Sugar allows you to do |
10:34 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: agree - let's do that too |
10:35 |
sdziallas |
notes that he sees Karlie at the moment in a Fedora channel and lets Sean do OLPC stuff now |
10:35 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: if Gary hasn't had time to work on the first perhaps he would do both |
10:35 |
|
OK re OLPC, |
10:35 |
JT4sugar |
SeanDaly, That would be great-if you can him him with both |
10:36 |
SeanDaly |
Nicolas communicated very important news which is 100% sure to be slashdotted |
10:36 |
|
liliputing has it already, others to follow in the next couple of days |
10:36 |
tomeu |
http://hardware.slashdot.org/s[…]e-Design-For-XO-3 |
10:36 |
carlo_f |
ciao all |
10:36 |
sdziallas |
ciao! |
10:36 |
tomeu |
(from your humble slasbot) |
10:36 |
SeanDaly |
greets carlo_f |
10:36 |
tomeu |
hi carlo_f! |
10:37 |
SeanDaly |
tomeu: soon I can set up a tent and offer crystal-ball service |
10:37 |
tomeu |
not sure that was too much of a guess ;) |
10:38 |
SeanDaly |
unfortunately OLPC message just got more complicated... |
10:38 |
|
tomeu: :D :D |
10:38 |
walterbender |
It was great to hear that he is waking up to the fact that the 2.0 design was flawed... |
10:38 |
cjb |
I see this is one of the days where I wake up and say "wait, Nicholas said what?" :) |
10:38 |
walterbender |
but I am not sure what 1.75 refers to... |
10:39 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: my understanding was "XO-1 form factor with ARM not VIA" |
10:39 |
walterbender |
and 3.0 is presumably a reference back to some of the ideas we explored before Fuse Project's involvement... some of the Design Continuum ideas |
10:39 |
tomeu |
cjb: it's all good news, from my POV. other than the sugar-as-an-application crap |
10:39 |
walterbender |
Paperlike displays will be more reasonable in a few years. |
10:40 |
tomeu |
cjb: has anybody from the techteam talked with him about that? |
10:40 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: he wants to keep XO-2 as a stillborn idea I guess? |
10:40 |
walterbender |
I guess |
10:40 |
SeanDaly |
anyway I just wanted to say that the incredible news from Peru is incredible |
10:41 |
|
Chuck has agreed to consider joint OLPC-SL PR on peru's decision |
10:41 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: exactly. we should be focusing on the reality of OLPC 1.5, not the dream of 3.0 |
10:41 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: yes, exactly |
10:41 |
|
but, this new development obliges us to clarify a little bit what's going on |
10:42 |
|
i want to express the great news that Sugar v0.86 will go out in hundreds of thousands of XOs |
10:42 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: why isn't the message simply that we are working closely with OLPC on 1.5 and would of course work with them on 3.0 when it beta machines become available |
10:42 |
|
^it^if :) |
10:42 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: yes |
10:43 |
JT4sugar |
I think we need to understand that he is really pushing a vision-he in essence said as much-I'm not sure we are going to get a message. So the joint PR should involve book access and then Spotlight Sugar upgrades for XO in field and on XO 1.5 |
10:44 |
walterbender |
JT4sugar: is the he you are referring to Nicholas? |
10:44 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: for sure... but people will be curious about a roadmap; what is difference between XO-1.5 and XO-1.75 for example |
10:44 |
JT4sugar |
walterbender, yes |
10:45 |
walterbender |
JT4sugar: I think we want to focus on Chuck and the Association, not Nicholas and the Foundation at this particular juncture. |
10:45 |
SeanDaly |
I would have suggested 1.8 instead of 1.75 ;-) shorter is better |
10:45 |
|
walterbender: fully agree - a good occasion to communicate the difference |
10:45 |
walterbender |
Chuck is delivering real hardware to real kids |
10:45 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: no XO-3,14159265? |
10:46 |
walterbender |
Nicholas is spreading the meme |
10:46 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: yes I had worked from talking points I prepared just before the Inquirer.net interview in that vein |
10:46 |
walterbender |
XO-e (natural log) |
10:46 |
sdziallas |
walterbender: LOL! |
10:46 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: :D |
10:46 |
|
"XO-Pi" |
10:46 |
JT4sugar |
walterbender, +1 |
10:47 |
SeanDaly |
XO-3i (imaginary number) |
10:47 |
cjb |
walterbender: the codename for 1.75 is "Zeno" |
10:48 |
SeanDaly |
For the PR: I haven't prepared a draft yet, but if we can agree on the draft soon, Chuck and Walter can greenlight it |
10:48 |
walterbender |
cjb: when are beta machines available? |
10:49 |
SeanDaly |
this flurry of news about OLPC and Sugar Labs will help Blueberry launch |
10:49 |
cjb |
walterbender: we're getting 1.5 finished first; I'd say at least four months away |
10:49 |
walterbender |
SeanDaly: I need to run in a minute... anything else you need me for? |
10:50 |
SeanDaly |
cjb: laid hands on my first B2 (Lionel's)... sweet |
10:50 |
walterbender |
cjb: good to know. looking forward to it. |
10:50 |
sdziallas |
walterbender: put a quick cloudberry vote in, that is ;) |
10:50 |
SeanDaly |
walterbender: Just the matter of a name for the next Sugar on a STick :-) |
10:50 |
walterbender |
sdziallas: you know my vote is yes. |
10:50 |
SeanDaly |
I heard Cloudberry and I love the name |
10:50 |
|
has that unexpected effluvience so important in marketing |
10:51 |
sdziallas |
:) |
10:51 |
SeanDaly |
and Cloud very buzzful buzzword ;-) |
10:52 |
sdziallas |
nods... SeanDaly: I'd like to make that the focus of SoaS v3, but we'll see. |
10:52 |
SeanDaly |
Are we able to say Cloudberry it is? last time there was looooong discussion about the flavor name |
10:52 |
walterbender |
it is a lovely shade of orange |
10:52 |
|
fwiw |
10:53 |
sdziallas |
walterbender, SeanDaly: maybe we should look which Sugar logo to use? |
10:53 |
|
SeanDaly: I'd say... let's GO for it :) |
10:53 |
walterbender |
gotta head downstairs... I will hopefully be back on-line in a few minutes |
10:53 |
SeanDaly |
my invite mentioning this on the agenda only went out today. So if someone just absolutely prefers another flavor.... |
10:54 |
JT4sugar |
If we had deals to back up student journals into the "Cloud" it would really be a worthy name |
10:54 |
SeanDaly |
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Marketing_Team/Logo |
10:54 |
|
the orangiest one we used for Strawberry already |
10:54 |
sdziallas |
JT4sugar: yes, definitely! |
10:55 |
|
SeanDaly: I'd guess either that: |
10:55 |
|
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/F[…]Logo_white_10.png |
10:55 |
|
or that, no? |
10:55 |
|
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/F[…]Logo_white_09.png |
10:56 |
SeanDaly |
sdziallas: yes, one or other could work |
10:56 |
|
especially since Gary had mentioned desire in the past for a greenish Gooseberry ;-) |
10:56 |
walterbender |
we could ask Christian for new colors for Cloudberry... plenty of time |
10:56 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: I like the first one more, but that's personal preference, because I feel the blue fits better. |
10:56 |
|
walterbender: oh, yeah, right! |
10:57 |
SeanDaly |
yes although Christian said last time I asked that these combos had been very specially selected ;-) |
10:57 |
|
I need to run now myself |
10:58 |
|
for Cloudberry why don't we post idea to the marketing and soas lists |
10:58 |
sdziallas |
SeanDaly: +1! |
10:59 |
SeanDaly |
But I think I would need lots of convincing to do a different name for v3 :-) |
10:59 |
|
any other topics to discuss today? |
10:59 |
JT4sugar |
On OLPC-SL joint PR: The key message for Sugar Labs seems to be "Sugar's on Board on all XO builds and just keeps getting better" and by the way did we mention the access to over a million free books |
11:00 |
SeanDaly |
JT4sugar: yes and there are other topics I want to get in: "following Uruguay's recent distribution to every student...." |
11:01 |
|
re Cloudberry: there could be a cloud on the horizon though: http://www.cloudberrylab.com/d[…]ge=explorer-azure |
11:02 |
|
ok end of meeting going once... |
11:03 |
|
going twice... |
11:04 |
|
#endmeeting |
